A moving image project motivated by my studies at Ilam School of Fine Arts (2018) and my own observations of societies obsession with consuming, sharing and engaging on line. It’s a dark representation of the world of fake news, lies and often hatred that continues to feed into our everyday lives. We are accepting this as the new normal in the digital age.
On a basic level, this short video reflects how consuming digital media has a negative effect on my own mental health, and the trance like dissociation from the real world that follows, when using mobile devices for long periods of time.
On a deeper level this project explores how we are manipulated by the signifier (a clue something happened, or a display that communicates messages) and how we interpret it, then act upon them (signified) when consuming digital media on a daily basis.
A huge thank you to Lara for being such a great subject and help with this project (and others), and Deb for the portrait. I constructed the installation, captured all footage, and did the editing along with the soundscape production.
